A Brief explanation of the cabinet market today:

Large National Corporations:

Mass-production offers limited choice of door styles, finishes and sizes. The quality range is from builders grade to low-end custom cabinetry. Their are many price points, from relatively inexpensive to those approaching some custom cabinetry in cost only. In this category the best buy is in the middle price points.

Semi-Custom:

Built by both large and small companies, however, mass production is still the norm offering better choice of styles, finishes and custom sizes are also available. Quality in this category is somewhat above good stock cabinetry but has less price points and are less expensive than true custom cabinetry. In this area basic cabinetry is a good buy and customization is at a premium.

Custom:

Smaller Companies (there are exceptions but the best truly comes from very small shops). Hands-on workbench quality cabinetry with unlimited choice of styles, finishes and sizes. This is where you will find one of a kind peices, doors, finishes, etc. This is higher quality because of more attention to detail and construction, from good to the very best. The price in this category is from mid to high-end, but the value is having cabinets to meet you specifications.

In today's cabinet market there is an overlapping of the above for example: stock companies do semi-custom, while some are formally true custom operations have entered the same arena. For the most part you get what you pay for.
